Key results

The Multiple Benefits partners thank the European Commission and all of the stakeholders - policymakers, companies, trade associations, technical and research institutions - for their input and support!

Valuing & Communicating the Multiple Benefits of Energy Efficiency aimed to and succeeded in creating an approach to include multiple benefits of energy efficiency in investment assessment and decision-making of companies. This overall goal has been achieved through the combination of research activities, development of a robust methodology, testing and evaluation of the approach and its effects on investment. Key results and outcomes from the project are summarised in the Final Report and are described briefly below.

Methodology & toolkit

A step-wise approach to identifying, assessing/quantifying, and communicating multiple benefits associated with energy saving measures was developed and tested. The tools developed include:

  • Evaluation toolkit: Key resources to the analytical and decision-making process including analytical steps & milestones.
  • Communication tools: Tools useful for Energy Managers to more effectively communicate energy saving projects to upper management/decision-makers.
  • Training materials: The User Manual (same as that of the evaluation toolkit) and Serious Game to practice the method and use the tools.

Trainings in seven countries

Partners conducted trainings in Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Switzerland. Additionally, condensed training workshops were also held in Sweden and France (as part of the eceee Summer Study conference). Each implementing partner conducted at least 2 trainings for Energy Managers and other company representatives, which consisted of:

  • The Serious Game (available on wegas.albasim.ch), an online game simulating the process of convincing a company’s top management to implement energy efficiency measures.

  • The User Manual to facilitate comprehension and use of evaluation and communication tools by practitioners.

  • A master presentation on the introduction and explanation of the multiple benefits approach.

Pilot projects

24 companies participated in pilot projects and were led by implementation partners through the process of evaluating their energy efficiency measures. Case studies are available in the Libary

Final conference

The Multiple Benefits Virtual Conference attracted over 300 participants for an engaging event on May 11, 2021! Representatives from industry, the buildings sector, energy services, research and academia, and government and policy, and investors came together to discuss how companies realise competitive advantages through energy efficiency.

New evidence and tools were presented on how to make a compelling business case for energy-saving projects, and panelists and participants identified how the multiple benefits approach and results can bolster energy efficiency policy, programmes, and related green recovery efforts.

Key themes included:

  • Competitiveness – Companies highlighted competitive energy saving investments leading to improved value proposition, lower costs and risks

  • Enhancing the business case – New tools, project results and evidence linked energy saving projects/solutions to core business benefits
  • Synergies with green recovery – Panelists and participants made connections and identified synergies with efficiency policy, programmes, and related green deal and recovery plans.
