WSED keeps offering opportunities for Young Energy Researchers

(eceee news, 26 Sep 2019) The World Sustainable Energy Days (WSED) is one of Europe’s largest annual conferences in the field of sustainable energy. It is primarily not an academic event, but still offers a generous opportunity for young researchers. The Young Energy Researchers Conference is organized within the WSED and is dedicated to presenting the work and achievements of young researchers in the fields of energy efficiency and biomass.

Young Energy Researchers Conference – abstracts deadline 10 October.

The World Sustainable Energy Days (WSED) is one of Europe’s largest annual conferences in the field of sustainable energy, and takes place each spring in Wels/Austria. With more than 660 delegates from 60 countries from research, business and the public sector, the WSED connects people and empowers them to embrace the change for achieving a smart, socially fair and sustainable energy system.

The Young Researchers Conference is a part of the World Sustainable Energy Days and offers bright young minds the opportunity to interact with researchers and industry experts from all over the world.

The clean energy transition is taking on a new dynamic in Europe and worldwide. "Energy efficiency first" and "global leadership in renewables" are at the centre of this transformation process. This requires strong policies, competitive businesses, technology innovation, investments and the involvement of the citizens. It also needs young and innovative thinkers! For this reason, in 2012, a central place for young energy researchers was created within the World Sustainable Energy Days.

The Young Energy Researcher Conference and Award

Throughout the years, over 400 Young Researchers have participated in the conference. For many, this was a first-time opportunity to hold an international presentation. In 2019, 90 proposals were received from 46 countries.

Through a call for papers, contributions are selected by a high-level scientific committee and invited to share their work. The organiser covers the costs of accommodation, meals, participation and local transport for up to 60 selected participants. Moreover, the conference’s two most outstanding contributions are honoured with the awards "Best Young Energy Efficiency Researcher" and "Best Young Biomass Researcher" and receive 1,000 Euro each in prize money.

In 2019, these awards went to Rita Sturmlechner, researcher at BIOENERGY 2020+ in Austria (Paper: "Real-life emissions of domestic wood heating appliances"), and Colin Nolden, vice-chancellor’s fellow at the University of Bristol in the UK (Paper: "The role of entrepreneurs in assetising energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction property rights").

Call out to Young Energy Researchers – Deadline 10 October 2019

The next edition of the Young Energy Researchers Conference will take place from 4 – 5 March 2020 in Wels/Upper Austria. Don’t miss the opportunity to present your research and communicate your ideas to the energy efficiency community! The Call for Papers is open until 10 October 2019. Submissions are welcome from all scientific fields (e.g. technology & engineering, economic and social sciences, architecture, law, arts). Further information can be found on the conference website.
